8th-Grade Career Expo Helps Students Find Potential Career Pathways
July 8, 2024
Springfield is always adapting to the evolving business landscape and industry challenges, is taking proactive steps to address workforce needs and cultivate a local talent pipeline. The Greater Springfield Partnership, through initiatives like the 10th annual 8th-grade Career Expo hosted by the Community Improvement Corporation of Springfield Clark County, is shaping the future workforce by providing invaluable opportunities for students to explore diverse career paths and connect with potential employers.
Held at the Hollenbeck Bayley Creative Arts and Conference Center on May 9th, the Expo welcomed over 1,000 students from Springfield, Northwestern, Kenton Ridge, Northeastern, Shawnee, and Greenon, along with approximately 30 employers. The event, focusing on all 16 nationally recognized career clusters, showcased various professions—from agriculture and natural resources to science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM), including architecture, business management, health sciences, and information technology.
Students Engage in Meaningful Discussions with Local Employers
Preparation for the Expo began with students taking the YouScience assessment at their schools. This assessment helped students identify their interests and aptitudes, guiding them in selecting career clusters to explore at the event. Equipped with this knowledge, students engaged with 29 Clark County employers, making meaningful connections and gaining insights into various industries.
"Our goal for this event is to lay the groundwork for these students to better understand all the amazing opportunities right here in our community which align directly with each student's aptitudes and interests," explained Amy Donahoe, Director of Workforce Development.
The Expo introduces students to potential career paths and underscores Springfield's commitment to workforce development from an early age. By facilitating interactions between students and professionals, the event sets the stage for future career exploration through high school courses, vocational training, or higher education.
Workforce Development is a Priority for The Greater Springfield Partnership
For businesses eyeing Springfield as a potential location, the Expo is a testament to the city's dedication to nurturing a skilled workforce. Springfield's proactive approach to early career conversations and its showcase of diverse opportunities make it an ideal destination for businesses seeking talented employees. This commitment to talent development benefits local industries and creates a thriving community where businesses and the workforce flourish together.
"The Expo is a transformative experience for many students, opening their eyes to careers they never knew existed and aligning them with their passions and abilities," Donahoe observed.
Feedback from employers and schools has been overwhelmingly positive, highlighting the Expo's efficacy in exposing students to the world of work. These early interactions help students envision their future and provide local businesses with a pool of potential future employees.
As plans are underway for the 11th annual Expo in May 2025, its impact on Springfield's youth and economy is set to grow. By bridging the gap between education and industry, Springfield fosters a sustainable environment where businesses and the local workforce can thrive, ensuring a prosperous future for the community.
