In 2023, Springfield and Clark County experienced a remarkable surge in economic growth, driven mainly by the robust tourism sector. According to an economic impact study conducted by Tourism Economics in partnership with TourismOhio, visitors to Clark County generated an impressive $561.8 million in local economic impact. This influx of tourism dollars underscores Springfield's appeal as a top destination and highlights the Greater Springfield Partnership's (GSP) pivotal role in fostering quality of life improvements.
Financial Impact

The economic ripple effect of tourism extends beyond immediate spending, permeating various sectors of the local economy and enhancing the financial well-being of residents. This increase in labor income for local talent means that money is reinvested into the community through dining, shopping, and other daily spending opportunities.
Tax Revenue and Fiscal Benefits
Tourism's economic contributions significantly bolstered local tax revenues, generating $70.5 million in tax impacts for 2023, including $15.6 million in local tax revenues, translating to a tax burden relief of $641 per household. Such fiscal benefits underscore the importance of tourism in alleviating the financial pressures on local residents while funding essential public services.
Employment and Economic Stability
Tourism remains a cornerstone of the Clark County economy, sustaining 7.5% of private employment. Creating and maintaining 4,639 local jobs through tourism-related activities provide stable income sources for many households, reinforcing the community's economic resilience. The 22%+ increase in tourism impact in 2022, followed by an additional 4.2% rise in 2023, demonstrates a robust recovery and growth trajectory post-pandemic.
Greater Springfield Partnership's Role
Through its Visit Greater Springfield initiative, the GSP has been instrumental in attracting visitors and enhancing the area's appeal. The significant economic returns have validated the organization's strategic marketing efforts. Chris Schutte, Vice President of Destination Marketing for the GSP, attributes this success to a comprehensive brand strategy that resonates with regional tourists seeking memorable getaways.
"Our significant rebound in the post-COVID landscape validates our investment in a comprehensive brand strategy for our community that continues to attract visitors in the market for a regional getaway," Schutte remarked.
