Growing Talent at Home: How the Magnify Internship Program is Shaping Springfield's Future Workforce
June 18, 2025
It's not every day that high school students get to sit face-to-face with a potential employer and walk out with a genuine internship offer, but that's exactly what's happening in Springfield.
Thanks to the Magnify Internship Program, students from 11 local high schools and one homeschooler could learn about career opportunities and apply that knowledge for potential internships. With over 130 interviews conducted and dozens of local companies participating, this year's program is helping prepare students for the future of real-world opportunities.

Springfield's success tomorrow depends on our investments in students today. That's the heartbeat of the Magnify Internship Program, a flagship initiative under the EXPAND 2029 talent cultivation strategy led by the Greater Springfield Partnership.
This year, 61 students participated in the program, each gaining valuable exposure to in-demand careers, workplace expectations, and community connections. The program isn't just about placing students in internships; it's about building a bridge between the classroom and the real world, giving students a reason to see Springfield as where their careers can thrive.
"The Magnify Internship Program provides young talent with invaluable hands-on experience while fostering a sense of community and collaboration," said Tony Cooper with Pro-Stratus. “Programs like this are essential in preparing the next generation for the workforce, and we are proud to be a part of it.”
Real-World Prep from Real-World Employers
Before students even sat down for interviews, they participated in an Internship Training Day hosted by local employers, including Assurant, Woeber Mustard, Dole Fresh Vegetables, and Clothes That Work. With help from Springfield Foundation, Speedway/7-11, WesBanco, and more, students received crash courses in resume writing, interview skills, professional expectations, and personal branding.
Community partners like Clark State College, OhioMeansJobs Clark County, and the Springfield Small Business Development Center were also on-site to offer guidance and resources, proving once again that when Springfield comes together, students win.
Two Days. Over 130 Interviews. Countless Opportunities.
By the time Interview Days rolled around, students were ready. On April 30 and May 1, more than 20 employers sat down with students to find the right match for the summer and potentially beyond. Employers ranged from the Springfield City School District and United Way to Gentle Dental and Littleton & Rue.
Each student had the opportunity to interview with up to three companies, chosen based on interest and aptitude insights powered by the YouScience platform. This strategic pairing ensures that students explore careers that align with their strengths.
"The Magnify Internship Program is an incredible journey to be a part of for both the employers and students," said Karissa Lisch, Human Resources Manager at Woeber Mustard. “We hired a summer intern in 2024 and she's continued to work throughout the school year. She's been instrumental to our Food Safety & Quality department, especially during an unexpected medical leave.”
More Than a Summer Job
While the program may begin with a summer internship, it doesn't stop there. Several students continue working into the school year, gaining deeper experience and stronger professional relationships. Employers also benefit by accessing driven young talent with fresh perspectives and a passion for learning.
"These students in the Magnify Internship Program could possibly be our future CEOs, COOs, and CFOs," said Jamie Gibson, Recruiting and Talent Engagement Manager at The Ohio Masonic Communities. “As some of the established market begins to retire, ushering in new employees into the market is important to help them grow and establish themselves in their chosen careers.”
Magnify Today. Expand Tomorrow.
At its core, the Magnify Internship Program shows students what's possible—here, in Springfield. It's about helping them see a future filled with opportunity, not somewhere else, but in their backyard.
This program is a key piece of the EXPAND 2029 vision: a bold commitment to growing local talent, filling workforce pipelines, and ensuring Springfield continues to thrive for generations to come.
Because when we invest in our students, we invest in Springfield's future.
